Taking a moment to relax while the sea gently washes over her toes, Hattie takes time to self-reflect.  She comes to understand that she has been a very sad and frightened little girl.   More importantly, she understands that her sadness will pass.

When children grieve, it can be difficult for them to fully understand that the awful fear and pain they experience will soon pass.  The story of Hattie not only provides students with a means to reflect, but also provides encouragement to endure the emotionally trying times they are facing.
